Like just about any topic, the field of dentistry has its fair share of myths surrounding it. At New Day Dentistry PLLC, we want to set the record straight and debunk some of the most popular myths that may be keeping you from the best possible oral care.
Myth #1: You only need to go to the dentist if your teeth hurt
Not true. Prevention is better than the cure – so diagnosing and curing a tooth problem early is makes it most treatable and cost-effective. Best to see a dentist twice a year for regular cleanings and other preventative measures.
Myth #2: Oral health has nothing to do with physical health
In fact, there are many correlations between your mouth and the rest of your body. A mouth that has periodontal disease is more likely to cause bacteria to enter the bloodstream and result in other health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and more.
Myth #3: Adults are too old to have braces
Not anymore! Although metal braces are not aesthetically appealing to most adults there are now modern solutions including clear aligners, such as Invisalign, to fix crooked teeth and create stunning smiles (for people of all ages).
MYTH #3: Sugar causes cavities
Yes, consuming sugar leads to dental decay and cavities, but there are often other more significant contributors including genetics and environmental factors. Sugar can cause the increase of bacteria in your mouth that causes cavities, but genetics and the environment are more likely to determine if these bacteria will cause cavities or not.
MYTH #4: Vanity is the only reason for cosmetic dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry is often an investment in well-being. Many treatments are designed to enhance better overall oral health. Aligning a bite and replacing missing teeth with implants to maintain bone structure are examples of orthodontic and cosmetic procedures that provide a solution to a problem and at the same time improve oral health and confidence.
MYTH #5- You don’t need to brush baby teeth
Not only does starting to brush a child’s teeth when young instill good habits, but it’s imperative to avoid future dental complications.
