There are a bevy of good sources of information available about how to properly care for our teeth. Take our friendly family dentist at New Day Dentistry PLLC. We believe in providing the facts so that our patients become active partners in maintaining optimal oral health. Unfortunately, there are some long-debunked myths that still persist. So, in the spirit of educating our patients, we’d like to tackle some of the erroneous beliefs that prevent some of us from properly caring for our teeth.
Myth: “My teeth look and feel fine, so there’s no need to visit the dentist.”
Fact: Our dentist and hygienist are specially trained to spot problems you may not be able to detect — yet. A routine checkup every six months is a key preventative step to avoiding trouble and expense later. And even if you’re brushing and flossing regularly, there are some places you just can’t reach, so a professional cleaning remains a necessity.
Myth: “Giving my teeth a hard brushing is the best way to keep them clean.”
Fact: Just the opposite is true! Brushing hard can harm your teeth’s protective enamel. Experts recommend brushing gently for two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Myth: “It’s best to brush my teeth immediately after eating.”
Fact: Waiting roughly 30 minutes after eating to brush and floss allows saliva to do its job by washing away acids in food.
Myth: “Sugar-free sodas and fruit juice are OK for my teeth.”
Fact: Diet sodas may not have sugar, but they still contain acids that wear away tooth enamel. And fruit juices contain both sugars and acids. We recommend making water your drink of choice.
Our natural teeth are precious, so naturally we want to do whatever we can to protect and preserve them. Regular checkups and cleanings with our dentist at New Day Dentistry PLLC are an integral part of keeping you healthy and smiling! Please contact us today for an appointment.
